Water immersion for labour & birth

Using the bath in labour and birth not only feels amazing but has proven benefits for both mum and baby. Current research as described by RANZCOG (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) shows that water immersion decreases the need for regional analgesia (epidural) and increases maternal satisfaction in the birth experience. A variety of benefits have been seen across a number of studies including:

  • an increase in spontaneous vaginal birth rate

  • decrease in second degree perineal tears

  • decrease in postpartum haemorrhage

A good summary of these studies can be found at www.sarawickham.com (a great resource for birth research and evidence).

Importantly, the most recent Cochrane Review on water immersion in labour and birth shows that there is no difference in adverse outcomes for mum or baby compared to birth on land.

Summary points:

  • Water immersion in labour and birth has been shown to be safe for both mum and baby

  • There are some proven benefits such as reduced epidural use and increased maternal satisfaction

  • Being GBS positive, prolonged rupture of membranes and VBAC labour are NOT primary contraindications for water birth (ie you can still safely use water immersion*)

*your care provider may recommend continuous monitoring and/or IV antibiotics in some of these situations so availability of waterproof monitoring equipment may affect local water immersion policy (of course, the choice is always yours - talk to your own care provider for personal and specific advice)
